Exploring the Greek Paradigm

Nearly every fraternity and sorority is founded these two basic principles:

  1. Social experience – bringing together like minded students to improve the collegiate experience
    1. Social Responsibility – improving the community.

Although each Greek Letter Organization interprets these principles differently, Greek Organizations share the same basic characteristics as a whole.

Greek students are:

  • Social
  • Leaders
  • Philanthropic
  • Mobile

Notice that none of these characteristics on their own are distinctively Greek. Together, though, they give us the basic Greek Paradigm for which Greek Letter Organizations can be viewed. Throughout Israel Amplified, participants examine the Greek community through this paradigm and work to bring Israel to their  peers through these characteristics.

_________________________________________________________

Social

Greek students are highly social in nature. Although the stereotype may differ, Greek Students join fraternities and sororities not for the parties but for the friends that they will gain and the brotherhood or sisterhood that will come from it.

Leadership

Greek chapters are different from every other club and group on campus because there is a higher level of ownership amongst the memberships. As soon as a Greek student joins his or her organization they are taught that they own their chapter. In this manor each Greek students learns quickly that in order for his organization to be successful he must start to lead early and often.

Philanthropic

All Greek houses regard philanthropy as one of the cornerstones of their programming, in fact the Greek community on campus raises more than $5 Million annually. When Greek students are not busy organizing their own philanthropies, they often are found serving on the boards of other intra-campus philanthropies.

High level of Mobility

One major aspect that separates Greek organizations from others is the ability of the entire community to mobilize quickly and efficiently for a cause. The Greek community experience is based around getting organized efficiently. This makes them ideal to partner with on Israel advocacy programs.

So What?

At Israel Amplified, Students will examine these characteristics and use them to come up with new programs that will engage their peers with Israel.
